The Walking Dead Gets A Spin-Off

Hot on the heels of the announcement of Breaking Bad breakaway Better Call Saul, AMC has unveiled plans to launch a spin-off series to mega-hit The Walking Dead.

Set to hit television in 2015, the as-yet-untitled series will again be overseen by Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and fellow executive producer Gale Anne Hurd.

There are no real plot details as of yet, but Kirkman has been speaking of giving Deadheads "another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse," going on to add that "the opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set [his] creativity racing."

This is the face of a man who will kill every person you will ever come to love

More Walking Dead is always a good thing, and shaking loose the shackles of the incredible comic series is no doubt an exciting one (the TV series is always zombie-shuffling a fine line between being predictable for comic fans and angering them by diverting too far for the established story), but I can't help but wonder how Kirkman plans to make this new series feel different to the parent show. Outside of a fresh cast and (presumably) a fresh geographic location, it's hard to imagine what new direction a show about surviving a zombie apocalypse can take while still existing in the parent universe [especially given that the comic series often comes close to repeating storylines just within its own run].

Is this really deserving of a separate show?

Meanwhile, The Walking Dead comic series celebrates its tenth anniversary next month with the beginning of the sure-to-be epic All Out War arc, that will run for twelve bi-monthly issues, and see the residents of the three communities taking up arms for a final battle with Negan's Saviours (TV viewers, you have all this to come...)
Seriously, Kirkman will kill all your favourite characters in this. It feeds him.

The fourth season of The Walking Dead starts in America next month. See the trailer below.
