Insidious 3 Confirmed

Entertainment One, FilmDistrict and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions have today formally confirmed that Insidious 3 is on the way.

The original has picked up a very respectable following. It was a flawed movie, sure, with a silly monster, some ill-judged "comic" relief characters and a frankly daft final act...

..This terrifying bint aside...

...but a very likable cast headed by Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson (fast-becoming a hero of the genre with this year's The Conjuring also under his belt) and some good old-fashioned earnestness made for an enjoyable ride.

The second installment in the franchise opened in the US and the UK this weekend to some impressive numbers (topping the US box office), despite less-than-stellar reviews, so a third seemed inevitable, although an announcement this soon is still surprising. I guess that Paranormal Activity and Saw have made it pretty hard for horror franchises to do anything but release near-annually.

Jason Blum will return to produce, alongside horror supremo Oren Peli, but it is unclear whether the director of the first two movies James Wan will be tempted back - following his work on The Conjuring, Wan has hinted that his flirtation with the horror genre may well be over.

Insidious Chapter 2 is in cinemas now. See the trailer below.
