Disney Aquire Rights To Future Indy Movies

It's a move that has been anticipated since Disney got their hands on Lucasfilm last year, but the rights to the future of the Indiana Jones franchise have finally been acquired by Disney, paving the way for a fifth installment of the hugely popular franchise.

Walt Disney Studios confirmed on Friday (December 6) that it now has the rights to market and distribute any upcoming movies from the franchise.

Paramount retains distribution rights for the first four Indiana Jones films, in addition to financially benefiting from any future movies.

Harrison Ford has made no secret of his desire to have anoth crack at the whip, previously hinting that his agreement to appear in Star Wars Episode VII may depend on a fifth Indy being at least considered by the studio.

Ford said during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show in October that he would jump at the chance to play Indiana Jones again.

"I don't think there is any barrier to Indiana Jones being an old fart," Ford joked. "I'm old enough that we don't need [Sean] Connery anymore - I'm old enough to play my own father!"

The fourth Indiana Jones movie - Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull - was a massive box-office success, but the film came in for some (hugely undeserved) criticism for its inclusion of aliens and UFOs - despite the fact that the aliens - and their on-screen depiction - was entirely in keeping with the serials of the fifties, when the film was set, just as the mysterious artefacts and globe-trotting adventure perfectly summed up the thirties serials that the first three films were paying homage to.

What this backlash would mean for the plot of Indy Five - should it now go ahead, which currently seems likely - is unsure.

But let's be honest, nobody would mind Mutt not showing up.
